Tony Awards: Lauper's Kinky Boots Wins Big

Tony Awards: Lauper's Kinky Boots Wins Big,  Four trophies would usually be plenty to crow about, but Matilda the Musical was well and truly trumped at last night's Tony awards, which yielded the worst haul for British artists in five years.

While the Royal Shakespeare Company's show, winner of a record-breaking seven Olivier awards in 2012, was nominated for 12 awards, it was Cyndi Lauper's musical adaptation of Kinky Boots, a British film about a shoe factory reinventing itself by making boots for drag queens, that took the laurels, winning six of the 13 categories in which it was nominated.

That meant that Matilda lost out in some of the most prestigious categories, not least best musical. British actor Bertie Carvel, who has already picked up several American awards for his performance as Miss Trunchbull, watched Kinky Boots' lead Billy Porter take home best actor in a musical, while Tim Minchin lost out to Lauper for his original score. Director Matthew Warchus was also pipped by Diane Paulus, whose acrobatic production of Pippin also won four awards.

However, Matilda faired well on the design stakes, with Rob Howell's set and Hugh Vanstone's lighting both winning, alongside Dennis Kelly's script, which won best musical book. The production's fourth award went to the American actor Gabriel Ebert, who plays Mr Wormwood.

Away from musical theatre, Christopher Durang's comic riff on Chekhov's work Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike was named best play, while actor-writer Tracy Letts won best actor – unexpectedly beating Tom Hanks – for his performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which also took best revival. Cicely Tyson, who returned to Broadway for the first time in three decades for The Trip to Bountiful, was named best actress.

Tyson, 79, said she had a "burning desire" to do just one more play and remarked a teleprompter was saying: "Please wrap it up. Well, that's exactly what you did to me. You wrapped me up in your arms after 30 years and now, I can go home with a Tony."

Nonetheless, the night belonged to Kinky Boots, which also won for sound design, choreography and orchestration, and its success will further fuel speculation of an impending West End transfer next year. Accepting her award, Lauper said: "I can't say I wasn't practicing in front of the shower curtain for the past couple of days," and went on to "thank Broadway, for welcoming me".
