Tornado survivor killed: 5-year-old’s temper tantrum ends in fatal dog attack

Tornado survivor killed: 5-year-old’s temper tantrum ends in fatal dog attack, The tornado survivor killed by the deadly bites of a Bull Mastiff dog when he threw a temper tantrum because he didn’t want to put on his shoes adds to one Moore family’s already experienced tragedy. "The dog possibly attacked because he felt threatened," said Deputy Scott Hinojosa according to a THV11 June 10, 2013, report.

“A police report said the boy was throwing a temper tantrum at a family friend's home over putting on a pair of shoes. While a woman was trying to calm him down, the dog came from another room and attacked the child.”

The five-year-old boy who was killed by the Bull Mastiff had just survived the Moore tornado that destroyed his family’s home. While his parents worked to rebuild their home in Moore, the boy and his two-year-old sister were staying in Jessieville, Garland County in Arkansas with friends of the family.

On Sunday around noon, the five-year-old tornado survivor was asked to put on his shoes but when he threw a temper tantrum, the Bull Mastiff apparently understood his behavior as aggression and attacked the boy. Even though the woman of the household tried to get the dog off the boy, the Bull Mastiff’s bites on the boy’s head and neck turned out to be fatal.

“The dog's owner, Lynn Geiling, 50, a friend of the children's parents, told investigators she tried to pull the dog off the boy but got there too late. He was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs with severe lacerations to his head and his neck.”

After the Bull Mastiff had killed the young tornado survivor, the dog ran away but was killed on Monday by a friend of the family. So far no decision has been made whether Lynn Geiling and her husband will face charges. The Bull Mastiff is "usually not bred to attack like many pit bulls but it is considered an assertive guardian dog that shouldn't be left alone with children,” reported NBC News on June 10, 2013.

Coincidentally, at the same time that the tornado survivor was killed by a Bull Mastiff, lawmakers in the very same county have been working on passing breed-specific laws and “possibly even ban certain breeds.”
