Jason Kidd was regarded as a coach on the floor during his 19 seasons as an N.B.A. point guard, a reputation he is now trying to parlay into a head coaching job with the Nets, despite his lack of formal experience.

Kidd made his pitch to Nets officials Monday, according to a person briefed on the meeting. To offset his own inexperience, Kidd is proposing to stock his bench with veteran coaches, including Lawrence Frank, the Nets’ former head coach, the person said.

ESPN.com first reported Kidd’s interest in hiring Frank, who has a 279-335 record in nine years as a coach with the Nets and Detroit Pistons. Frank, 42, formed a close relationship with Kidd during their six and a half seasons together with the Nets. Frank was an assistant when Kidd arrived in 2001 and rose to head coach in January 2004, replacing Byron Scott.

Kidd, 40, retired last week after one season with the Knicks. Despite his basketball acumen, he is considered a long shot for the job, given his inexperience. The top candidates include Lionel Hollins, who is out as the Memphis Grizzlies’ coach, and Brian Shaw, the associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Shaw is scheduled to interview with the Nets on Wednesday.
