Sens. Cruz, Paul singled out by Biden as defeating gun legislation

Sens. Cruz, Paul singled out by Biden as defeating gun legislation, Vice President Joe Biden is not known as wallflower, and his comments Tuesday night at a fundraiser were as provocative as ever.

“The last thing in the world we need now is someone who will go down to the United States Senate and support Ted Cruz, support the new senator from Kentucky — or the old senator from Kentucky,” Biden said at an event to raise money for the Senate campaign of Rep. Ed Markey, who is running for the Senate seat previously occupied by now-Secretary of State John Kerry. The “new” Kentucky senator is Rand Paul, the “old” one is Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Biden continued.

“On the gun issue, I don’t care what your position is — I called 17 senators out, 9 of whom were Republicans,” he added, according to a pool report. “Not one offered an explanation on the merits of why they couldn’t vote for the background check. But almost to a person, they said, ‘I don’t want to take on Ted Cruz. I don’t want to take on Rand Paul. They’ll be in my district.’”

“I actually said, ‘Are you kidding? These are two freshman,’” Biden said.

He quickly added that he was not questioning Cruz’s or Paul’s motives, saying they’re “not bad guys” and “very bright.”

Biden’s comments will likely help the duo in their circles, and both the Kentucky and Texan senators are seen as possible Republican presidential candidates in 2016.

Also on the gun front, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is telling his donors not to support the four Democratic senators — Mark Pryor, Max Baucus, Mark Begich and Heidi Heitkamp — who voted against that law. According to the New York Times, the four raised $2.2 million from New Yorkers. Since voting no, Baucus has announced he’s not running for re-election.

The report said Bloomberg’s tactics are upsetting some Democrats. ““Do you think you’d be better served by Majority Leader McConnell?” Majority Leader Harry Reid reportedly told Bloomberg, according to the newspaper.
