“They didn’t think it would be appropriate to be partying while their grandfather was in hospital,” one of the Princesses’ friends tells me.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who turned 92 on Monday, is recovering at the London Clinic after an exploratory operation on his abdomen last Friday. He is expected to remain at the hospital near Harley Street for two weeks.
Fergie and the Princesses are friends of Tamara, the 28-year-old daughter of Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One tycoon.
Two years ago, they attended the wedding of her sister, Petra Ecclestone, in Italy, which cost more than £12 million to stage. Those nuptials, which were held in a castle north of Rome, included performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Black Eyed Peas, while the bride wore an £80,000 Vera Wang dress.
Tamara has married Jay Rutland, 33, who was banned by the Financial Services Authority last July from “any function in relation to any regulated activity” after the senior stockbroker at Pacific Continental Securities watered down risk warnings and disclosed inside information in sales scripts. The wedding was held at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat.
